MAUHS Senior Project
2009-10
Senior Project allows students to demonstrate their ability to design and participate in a multi-phased, research-based learning process, while preparing for their future in higher education, vocational institutions, and the work force. Senior Project gives a portrait of the graduating senior, demonstrating the student’s ability to write, speak, apply knowledge, solve problems, and use real-world skills such as time management, organization, and risk taking.
The Senior Project course is designed to enhance and enrich the senior year. Seniors will participate in a non-traditional, student-interest based learning opportunity. The four components of the Senior Project are: 1) A research paper; 2) The Project; 3) The Portfolio; & 4) The Presentation. Individual choice and self-direction are encouraged and supported throughout the Senior Project. Students will select and meet regularly with a staff partner and a project mentor.

The Senior Project concept began in 1986 at South High School in Medford, Oregon, as a culminating
assessment tool for evaluating high school seniors. In 1988, Senior Project won the NEA award for
Academic Excellence. In 2002, the intellectual property rights for Senior Project were sold to the
University of North Carolina. Currently about 1000 high schools across the country offer Senior
Project; many schools use the course as a graduation requirement for seniors. For more on Senior
Project, visit the national website:

Senior Project at Mount Anthony Union High School began in 2004 and is offered as a graded elective
course. Students demonstrate their ability to design and participate in a multi-phase learning
process, directed by their individual interests and skills. Through a series of introspective
exercises students will define an area of interest to pursue. Students pursue their topics through
four components of the course:
Click on Section Below, for detailed information:
The Paper
- Students research and write a paper of 6 - 9 pages
in length (MLA Format);
The Project
- Students will experience/develop a project
related to their area of interest. Projects will range from a physical product to a field study
experience. Seniors dedicate 30-hours to their project;
The Speech
- Students will make a verbal presentation to
groups comprised of teachers, administrators, parents, business, and community representatives; and
The Portfolio
- Students will compile and organize the
collection of work materials from the Senior Project course, including journal entries, Letter of
Intent, the paper, grading rubrics, etc.
Students will be expected to demonstrate a “learning stretch” in their work for Senior Project.
