Substance Abuse Policy - Policy #5175, #5180
Drug offenses are sequential from 7th grade; example: If a student has
a drug offense in the 7th grade and then another in 11th grade, the 11th grade offense is considered the 2nd offense. Also, if there seems to be a safety issue due to the alcohol offense, the administration will determine whether the student can continue to take part in classes involving safety issues, such as:
CDC shop classes, science classes, physical education.
Category: Alcohol and other controlled substances
Subject: Guidelines to be followed when students use alcohol or other controlled substances on school grounds during the day or at school functions, or distribute or sell alcohol or other controlled substances (i.e. marijuana pipe), or found to be under the influence of such substances,
or in the presence of students using such controlled substances. This also applies to students who smell of alcohol or marijuana.
Procedure: When there is an apparent use of alcohol and/or other controlled substances, the following procedure will be followed by all school personnel:
A. The student will be referred immediately to the school administrator, school nurse, student assistant counselor or SRO, for initial observation and treatment. The nurse will inform the student’s parent(s) and make arrangements to transfer the student to the local hospital if immediate attention is required. If possible, the family physician should also be notified in the event the student is transferred to the hospital.
B. If emergency attention is not indicated, the parent of the student will be notified and requested to come to the school to take the student home. If the student has been found to be in possession of a controlled substance, or is a minor in the possession of alcohol, or is suspected of distributing and/or selling such controlled substances, the SRO will be informed of the incident at the time and the parent made aware of the intent of the school to do this.
