Smoke-Free Environment
Policy #1060; #5185
Policy #1060:
The Board recognizes that tobacco and smoking in the school and work environments is not conducive to good health. As an educational organization, the District provides both effective educational programs and a positive example to students concerning the use of tobacco.
The Board declares all facilities operated by the Board, and all spaces within them, to include school buses and other school-operated vehicles, to be officially designated tobacco-free environments. Staff, students and members of the public are prohibited from using tobacco in any form in or on school facilities.
Smoking is prohibited on school grounds and at all school activities. Principals and/or their designee shall make announcements and/or post signs, as appropriate, informing the public of these procedures.
Policy #5185:
Smoking is not allowed in the school building or anywhere on school grounds at anytime, including after school and during weekend activities.
No persons shall be permitted to use tobacco on public school grounds, and no student shall be permitted to use tobacco at public school sponsored functions. These policies include confiscation and appropriate referrals to law enforcement authorities. Policy prohibits the possession and use of tobacco products by students at all times while under the supervision of school staff.
Violation of this policy shall be subject to having the tobacco products immediately confiscated and shall be further subject to a civil penalty of $25.00. In the case of failure to pay a penalty, the traffic and municipal ordinance bureau shall mail a notice to the person at the address in the complaint notifying the person that failure to pay the penalty within 60 days of notice will result in either a suspension of the person’s operator’s license for a period of not more than 90 days or delay the initial licensing of the person for a period of not more than one year.
An individual who sells or furnishes tobacco products to a person under 18 years of age shall be fined subject to a civil penalty of not more than $100.00 for the first offense and not more than $500.00 for any subsequent offense.
