School / Class Absence Policy - (POLICY #5030 & 5035)
Students who miss more than eleven (11) days of class in a semester, six (6) days in health or twenty-one (21) in a full year course, may be denied credit for graduation. Parent will be informed in writing by the classroom teacher after the 5th and 9th absences in a semester course, plus the 15th and 19th in a full year course or 2nd and 4th in health. If a 9th absence notice for a course is received , please call your student’s school counselor immediately to schedule a parent/student/counselor/teacher conference.
If taking CDC classes, please check their policy.
Since instructional time is of the utmost importance, and with block scheduling a missed class period is equivalent to two 45 minute classes, it is expected that students attend all classes unless there are excusable reasons for missing a class.
Exceptions for school/class absences:
1. Extended illness – must be under doctor’s care and student must show proof of absences by presenting a signed licensed physician’s note within five days upon their return to school, listing illnesses and days excused as a direct result of illness.
2. School –related absences: each student will be permitted three (3) school related absences (i.e. field trips, exchanges Model U.N., Model Congress, sports meets, college visits) per semester that do not count toward total accrued absences.
3. A student who misses more than ½ a long block class(45 minutes or more, 25 minutes in a short block) will be considered absent.
4. A student who is late to class up to 45 minutes (25 minutes in a short block) will be assigned a teacher detention of proportionate time.
5. Students may receive a failing grade for work missed due to unexcused lateness or cutting.
If you feel that your student’s attendance record is inaccurate, please contact your student’s school counselor. A student/parent may request a hearing within seven (7) calendar days of notification when loss of credit is imminent. To regain credit lost through excessive absences, a student may attend the Tutorial Center, (or work with a pre-approved tutor). Students who miss 18 days or more from a ½ year course (36 for a full year) must retake the course at Mount Anthony Union High School during the regular school year
School absences will be determined by the attendance taken in first period class A daily attempt will be made to contact parents concerning absences.
